Missing a tooth… bridge that gap! At our modern practice in Stone, Staffordshire.

A dental bridge can transform a space by giving you a fixed option. When you have a tooth missing, there may be several options to replace it, and one of those could be a bridge. Missing teeth can cause other teeth to drift into the spaces, causing areas which are difficult to clean and therefore at a higher risk of needing further treatment due to decay. We would need to do a thorough assessment of your surrounding teeth to assess whether a bridge would be a suitable option for you.

Our dental bridges in Stoke-on-Trent are a fixed option to replace one or more missing teeth. The teeth on either side of the space are prepared from crowns but these two crowns are fused together by a tooth (called a pontic) which will replace the missing tooth, therefore ‘bridging’ the gap! Filling the space will help to aid function and help to maintain the health of the surrounding teeth.

If you have recently had a tooth removed, the healing process can take up to six months, we would recommend a temporary denture during this period. A bridge can be made once the healing has been completed, this will give a more pleasing fit and a longer-lasting bridge.

Bridges are normally made of porcelain-like a crown and usually have a metal base inside to give them the strength for normal function. After your bridge has been fitted we will show you how to clean around it, giving it a much longer life span.

There may be other options available to replace missing teeth. Have a look at our denture or implant sections.

There are three different types of bridges that we can provide:

Maryland bridge – This was first developed at the University of Maryland and is often used to bridge a gap between the front teeth. It consists of a pontic, made from porcelain which is fused to a metal framework, this takes the form of two ‘wings’ which appear on each side of the pontic. and bonded to your natural teeth.

Traditional fixed bridge -This involves the fixing of a pontic between two porcelain crowns which are fastened to your natural teeth or dental implants. The pontic can be made of ceramic or porcelain fused to metal and cannot be removed by the patient.

Cantilever bridge – This is an option where there is a natural tooth on just one side of the gap. This involves the fixing of a pontic to a porcelain crown, which is fastened to your natural tooth or dental implants. The pontic can be made of ceramic or porcelain fused to metal and cannot be removed by the patient.
