HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR DENTAL IMPLANTS

Tooth implants are just like natural teeth – they need looking after. Without proper care, they can develop a coating of plaque that can lead to infection and disease in the gum and surrounding bone, bleeding, soreness and potentially the loss of the implant altogether. And, if you’ve had oral problems in the past like gum disease, you have a higher risk of developing this around your implants.

So after making the choice to have dental implants, what’s the best way to maintain them and ensure they stand the test of time? Here at Abbey House Dental Practice in Staffordshire, we have lots of ideas for looking after your tooth implants so you can make the most of your beautiful new smile.

1) Have regular check-ups

It’s worth booking in with us every 6 months to check your dental implants are being properly maintained. We do ask that these checks are done by us, as we can detect problems quickly and early on. If you’ve been referred to us from another practice or Dentist, or you have implant-retained dentures, then you’ll only need an annual check-up. We’ll also replace any worn connections on a yearly basis.

2) Talk to your hygienist

From recommendations for the right brushes and products to care for your new tooth implants, to tips on keeping them clean and healthy, your hygienist will give you the skills, tools and techniques needed to keep them in top condition.

3) Prioritise good oral hygiene

Ensure you brush twice daily and floss afterwards. Try to use a toothpaste with fluoride levels of at least 1350ppm (parts per million). If you smoke, have a high alcohol intake or eat a lot of sugary foods, it’s worth cutting down on these too.
There’s also lots you can do when you first have implants fitted:

– Brush your teeth as normal from the evening of your surgery onwards. Take care around the area where your implants were placed, as they may feel tender.
– In the first week or so, wash your mouth regularly with salt, as this can aid healing. Dissolve one teaspoon of salt in a cup of hot water and use as often as you like.
– Rinse your mouth after eating and try to avoid smoking, as this can inhibit healing.
– Try to avoid touching the area and having hot drinks or foods over the first day or so. There may be some pain, swelling and light bleeding, but this should pass.

If you’d like any more information on dental implants or are considering booking in at the dentist for a treatment, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our dental practice, here in Staffordshire, today.
