DENTAL IMPLANTS: THE PROS & CONS

Of our cosmetic dentistry treatments, dental implants remain one of our more popular options. Ideal for helping restore one or more of your missing teeth, they can bring your smile back to life and have some surprising other benefits, too.

In this post, we’ll go through the pros and cons of tooth implants and talk you through what you can expect if you book in with Abbey House dental practice here in Staffordshire.

The Pros

There are lots of positives to having the treatment. Here are a few in brief.

  1. Durability – your tooth implants will act just like your natural teeth, meaning you’ll be able to bite, chew and eat as you would normally. Dental implants are fixed into your jaw using a metal post, which means they won’t shift easily, either.
  2. Appearance – if you want a replacement tooth (or teeth) without the ‘fake’ look, dental implants are ideal. They have a very natural appearance – so much so, that people may not realise you have them at all. Best of all, they can help reverse the affects of ‘sagging’ where missing teeth caused a sunken appearance to your face.
  3. Lifelong – with good oral healthcare, you can expect your new teeth implants to last as long as natural teeth would.
  4. Healthy dental implants can actually help maintain your bone health, as you no longer have a gap or space caused by a missing tooth.
  5. Fussfree – with your new tooth implants in place, you can look forward to eating and talking as you would with your natural teeth, with no need to make changes to your diet.

The cons

As with any treatment, there can be negatives. But, by reading on, you’ll see how to easily combat each and every one.

  1. Expense – at first glance, dental implants might seem expensive. But when you consider that they are a permanent, fixed option for missing teeth which can last a lifetime, the cost isn’t that high. In addition, we at Abbey House Dental in Staffordshire offer finance to help split the cost of your treatment at our dental practice.
  2. Complications – any kind of dental surgery can carry risks of complications – including teeth implants. But by booking in with an experienced team and a top-rated dental practice, these risks are minimised. It’s worth remembering that dental implants have a high success rate.
  3. Side-effects – again, surgery carries risks of side-effects. With dental implants, these are typically swelling, bruising, bleeding and slight pain, though this can usually be managed with cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relief.

As for caring for your new dental implants, there’s lots you can do – from following a good brushing and flossing routine, to having regular check-ups, to alerting your dental practice when things seem amiss (though it’s rare, it’s possible that your tooth implants could become loose or infected, for example).

If you’re interested in booking in for dental implants, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our dental practice here in Staffordshire today.
